McLaughlin as one of the grandchildren.

Census 1900: Military & Naval Population census for the Phillipine Islands, shows Edward stationed on Luzon Island in the 46th Infantry. Although his date of birth is shown as March 1879, his home address in the US is stated as North Hartland, VT, born in VT and both parents born in VT. Edward would have been only 18 in 1900. It's possible he lied about his age to join the military. There is a discrepancy for his birth date; however, the source for 1882 is Hartland, VT town records verified by both myself and Pat Geary and also in the Amos McLaughlin Family Bible, a copy in Pat's possession.

   Note: My grandfather entered WW1. You can find his draft registration card. The age on the card is wrong. According to my dad my grandfather wanted to help this country so he lied about his age! He was stationed in the Phillipines where he caught Malaria. As to what his job was I am unable to recall.
   Everyone figured him to die plus they didn't want to get Malaria themselves, so they pitched a tent just for him and left him there. After three days they returned, figuring him to be dead. When they pulled back the cover there sat my grandfather on the cot, alive. The first words out of his mouth were, "what's for supper. I'm hungry." We all figured him to have had the luck of the Irish for sure.
   At that time Claremont had electric cars.My grandfather worked repairing them. After cars of our era began to come in droves the electric cars became a thing of the past. He then began to work moving railroad ties, etc.. helping with the upkeep of the various cemetaries in town. Now, this is what I was told when I was younger.
   My grandfather was a very large man, very strong with a soft voice. He never raised his voice, but, according to my dad, when he grabbed you by the shirt with one hand and paddled your behind just once with the other, you knew you were in trouble. My dad was like that. When he spoke you knew you were in trouble or had done a fantastic thing that made him proud.
