Zacheus Curtis embarked on the "James" at Southampton, England, on April 5, 1635, his occupation being given on the Customs House record as labourer and his residence as Downton. According to a later estimate of his age he was born about 1619 and was terefore approximately sixteen years old at the time of his emigration. Inasmuch as a large number of his fellow passengers were from Wiltshire, his home was doubtless in that Wiltshire parish of Downton which is a few miles southeast of Salisbury, but an examination of the parish register, whicle revealing several contempory Curtis families, fails to identify him. Possibly he was born and baptised in one of the surroundingvillages.
Curtis probably settled in Salem, but we have no record of him until 1643. Some time before 1658 Curtis and his family settled in Reading. Zacheus Curtis's verbal will was testified to by John Ramsdel and Abigail Curtis, who stated that they were present when Curtis lay upon his deathbed, and that he declared that his will was that all of his grandsons should have twenty shillings each and his granddaughters ten shillings each, and that his son Ephraim should have the farm after his mother's death. The statement was sworn to on November 29, 1682 and John Curtis, Ephraim Curtis and Jonathan Looke, husband of Mary Curtis, assented to it.
