    Notes for Thomas Ousley:
There is no direct evidence that Thomas Ousley was the son of Weldon Owsley, although it appears virtually certain in that Thomas Ousley named his eldest known son Welden (Weldon) and was involved in various legal transactions with his purported father.

Thomas Owsley appears on the 1794, 1795 and 1807 tax lists of Hancock County, Georgia. On 18 Nov 1797, he witnessed the purchase of land by his father on Rocky Creek, in Hancock County, signing as Thos. Houseley (Hancock Co. Deeds, D: 450). In 1805, he participated in the Georgia Land Lottery, appearing as the 90th registrant, with "Welldone Owsley" as the 89th. Thomas Owsley was a resident of Jones County, Georgia from 1809 to 1812, and on 6 April 1809, he and Points Owsley there witnessed a deed (Jones Co. Deeds, B: 62). On 4 April 1812, he sold 101 1/4 acres of land for $450 to John Cohron. The deed was witnessed by Weldon Owsley (Jones Co. Deeds, Book D, 1812-1813, p. 201). On 8 Sept 1812, he was reported as a defaulter of the 1812 Federal Direct Tax for Hancock County. On 2 Dec 1812, the "Georgia Journal" announced that parts of the estates of Thomas Owsley, Weldon Owsley and John Owsley, all of Hancock County's First Collection District, Third Division, would be sold at public auction to satisfy taxes due thereon. In Oct/Dec 1817, Thomas and John Housley signed a petition as residents of the Alabama Territory and on 31 Dec 1818 a letter addressed to Thomas Ousley remained at the post office in Claiborne, Alabama Territory. In 1820, he and John Housley were counted in the census of the Cherokee Nation Lands in Alabama and by Oct 1824 had moved to Hinds County, Mississippi where he gave permission for his daughter, Ann, to marry. He appears on the 1830 census of Hinds County and by 1835 had moved to Madison County, Mississippi.

On 7 June 1838, at Bellefonte, Alabama, Thomas Ousley enlisted in Captain Armbrester's Company, Norwood's Battalion, Alabama Militia for a term of 3 months and was mustered out at Gunter's Landing, Alabama on 17 July 1838. He was recorded on the 1840 and 1850 censuses of Attala County, Mississippi and had settled in Leake County by 1851. In Aug 1857, Nixon Ousley presented the will of Thomas Ousley to the court for probate, but Weldon Ousley and other heirs filed their protest against the probate, and after consideration, the court declared the will null and void. Nixon Ousley was then appointed administrator of his father's estate (Leake Co. Probate Records, B: 98). On 11 Jan 1858, his property was sold at public auction at his residence by Nixon Ousley (Leake Co. Probate Records, B: 132). As a result of numerous petitions by the heirs, the estate was not settled until 16 June 1862 (Leake Co. Probate Records, B: 441, 450, 471-472, 480-488).

The estate probate identified the heirs in August 1857 as Welden Ousley, Andrew J. Ousley, Talitha Dean, Martha Dumas, Sarah Morgan, all of whom reside within the state of Mississippi, and Thomas Ousley, Jr., Ann Inghram, Sarah Barlow and Elizabeth Daily, who reside outside of the state.

Thomas Owsley was 1st married, before about 1800, to an unknown wife, known only from early census records as having been born 1780/1790 and died 1830/3. He married 2ndly, Priscilla, who is named with him in several Madison County deeds. She was living in 1840, but appears to have died by 1850 when Thomas Owsley is living alone.
