1. . Ralph Blankinship, Sr. was born 1662 in probably Cumbria, England, and died 1714 in Roxdale, Henrico Co., VA. He married MARTHA (last nameunknown) about 1690 in Henrico Co., Virginia. Charles and Hannah wereneighbors of Ralph Blankenship who lived just north of Conjurer’s Neckand Swift Creek, Virginia. This same Hannah Wilson later married anotherneighbor Edward Stanley following her first husband's death. AfterHannah's death Edward Stanley married Martha Blankenship in 1716following the death of her first husband Ralph Blankenship who died in1714. 2. Blankinship first arrived in Henrico Co., VA in 1686/87 3. "We know that on June 16, 1714 Ralph BLANKSHIP was named as headrightof Capt. Henry Harrison & Philip Ludwell for land they claimed in Surryand Isle of Wight. (Patent. 10:165). The Isle of Wright, Virginia is a small village 17.5 miles WSW ofNewport News, VA. Surry is another village 17.5 miles NNW of Isle ofWright. It is very close to Jamestown and is about 32 miles from whereRalph BLANKINSHIP first homesteaded in Henrico County, VA. The Isle ofWrite is about 45 miles southeast of Ralph's original homestead. Thelegal court document shows that Ralph was being claimed as a person whosesea transportation from Europe (England) was paid for by Capt. HenryHarrison and Philip Ludwell. The Virginia colony law at the time allowedanyone who paid for the transportation of another person to Virginia could claim the right(headright) to possession of 50 acres of land as their reward forbringing that person to America. If this claim for land was valid, andnot a fraudulent claim, it would mean that Capt. Henry Harrison and PhilipLudwell, had, in fact, paid for Ralph's return voyage from England toAmerica. Did Ralph sense that his death was imminent circa 1713 and wantto make a trip to his homeland just before he died? Did the debt Ralphincurred near the time of his death result from his having to pay for oneleg of his voyage to Europe. No one has ever answered this question whichI now leave for you. " Don

Circulating among the family is a coat of arms, with family seatinCumberland, England, orginally form Palatinate around GERMANY,dated1560, the escutcheon consists of a shield of red with border ofsilverindented, engrailed six amulets. The crest contains arms embowed, holdingaloft a sword. The motto "Deo, rege et patria" means For God, theKingand country. Joseph W Blankenship of Hilegard Ave in Berkely, Ca. wrote 3 pagesummaryof the Blankenship family, which was published in the KnoxvilleSentineton 30 Oct 1917. He stated that the first known Blankenship was aNormanknight, follower of William the Conqueror, who was given the taskofdefending the English border from the Scottish "rievera".BlenkinsopCastle is indeed still standing about 1/2 mile south of thetown ofGreenwood in Northumber County. One of the Mile Castles ( or PeleTowers)along Hardrian's Wall, the castle grounds now contain a trailerpark.During the time of Richard I, a bishop and a knight of the 3rdCrusadewere named "de Blenkensop". The name was said to mean "Blenkin'sHope" or"Blenkin's Valley". Mr. Blankenship describes the family The Blankenships are nearly all characterized by light complectionandblue eyes, tending in the Gilbert branch to red hair andruddycomplections, indicating their north European origins. Many areofunusual size and large families are characteristic. The family is ahardworking, home loving lot, not given to extremes of wealth orgenius, their scions are not found in Almshouses, asylums or prisons, honorablein their dealings with their fellowmen, given to deeds ratherthan words, they make good soldiers in war, good preachers in peace, useful citizensin every community. From the beginning the like of thepeople of thisname have been farmers, pioneers and soldiers, each newgenerationawakening out of the old hive and carving its home from theunbrokenwildersness, close up against the firing line of civilization The Blankenship Family History stated that Ralph Balakinsop landedinJames City Co Va 23 Jul 1640. In fact this was the date that RobertHoltpatented 700 acres in James City Co for the transportation ofpersons, one mentioned was Ralph Blakin. This date did not mark thearrival ofRalph, nor did it place him in James City County. Land wasapplied forafter the fact, sometimes many years later. Because thepantentee livedor was granted land in a place did not imply that theheadright set footon the same territory. In a patent dated 26 Dec 1653,Charles Grymesreceived 960 acres in Lancaster County Va for thetransportation of 19persons. One of these was Henry Blakinsop, but nofuther record of himhas been found. The first mention of RalphBlankenship, the immigrantacestor, was in1690 Henrico Court, when RichardKennon petitioned for8,000 acres of land. Ralph's name was listed alongwith 90 white personsand 70 negroes imported in 1686. A Ralph Blankenshipwas named asheadright of Capt. Henry Harrison and Phillip Ludwell forland in Surryand Isle of Wight on 16 Jun 1714 The Blankenships definately possessed the "wanderlust". Since Col.LeslieC Blankenship's family history, many have tried to expand, identify, andconnect the scattering families. Most gave up infrustration. This chapteris an attempt to bring some of these addedfamilies into view. Speculationis noted where used. Caution should beemployed in positive identifationand should rest on primary sources Ralph Blankenship born c 1662 (Desposition in Henrico dated 2 Apr1695that he was about 33 years of age) died by 15 Apr 1714 in Henrico aCourtOrder to appraise. Martha Blankenship entered adm. bond withsecuritiesCharles Clay and Richard Blankenship. Martha presented theinventory on 3May 1714. Appraisers: James Aiken, Robert Hudson andWilliam Ligon. TheCourt also appointed John Bowman, who did not serve Parents: Unknown Married: probably about 1690 Martha________ ( I have her as MarthaClay, does anyone know if this is correct) Martha died after 1734, whenAnthonyWilkerson deeded to Matthew Turner, land on the NS Swift Creek, boundedby Charles Clay, Martha Blankenship, Henry Walthal, Edward Hilland JohnFARROW Martha married 2nd 1716 Edward Stanley, widower. Edward's first wifewasHannah (Wilson) Clay. Hannah was first married to Charles Clay whodied1686. She was the d/o John Wilson. Charles and Hannah (Wilson) Clayhadsons: Thomas, John and Henry. Edward Stanley died by Jul 1726. He left 1/3 of his land to wife,Martha,2 plantations in Henrico for granddaughter, Frances Thweatt, items togranddaughters Mary and Hannah Thweatt, one shilling todaughter, HannahThweatt and 3 plantations on Cold Water Run to Ralph,John and JamesBlankenship. Martha Stanley presented the inventory in Jul1727 Court.Henry Hudson, John Bowman and Robert Hudson were appraisers Land patent 9 Jul 1724....Martha Blankenship for 20 shillingsandimportation of Francis Clappe...250 acres in Henrico, on SS ofJamesRiver adj. Henry Walthall. One would have thought that Martha wouldhaveused the surname Stanley as she did in 1723, Edward Stanley did notdieuntil 1726. On 7 Aug 1727 Martha STANLEY executed two separatedeeds"part of a grant to Martha Blankenship", 100 acres at the headofProctor's Creek to her son John and 100 acres to her son, Ralph.Thisland became part of Chesterfield County. In 1749?1727 a deed wasgivenfor Martha Stanley "to my son, William" 200 acres where he now livesonColdwater Run and Winterpork Creek. I did not find this deed inHenricoCounty Date: Patents for William Farlow (NS branch of Proctor's Creek)CharlesClay and John Worley . In 1725 mentioned Martha Blankenship asaneighbor. Richard born bef 1722 executed a Goochland Bill of Sale1743Goochland and was with William Worley inGoochland in 1746. The ClayandFarley descendants were with the Blankenships in Montgomery andGilesCounties To act as security in 1714 for Martha Blankenship, RichardBlankenshiphad to have been at least 21 years of age, indicating that hewas born1693. If a son, this date would place him as the eldest child. Norecordcould be found naming Richard until 1732 in Goochland Co. IfRichard bornsay about 1665, where Ralph's brother, he would have been age67 in 1732.Most likely, Richard Blankenship was the eldest son of Ralphand MarthaBlankenship, who inherited his father's estate as was theEnglish custom.Possibly he died inHenrico County, however I believe he isthe RichardBlankenship in Goochland. Since Richard's family was providedfor byinheritance, there was no need for bequest from Edward andMarthaStanley. William was the 2nd son, not a minor at the time of hisfather'sdeath. (The best I can make out is that Gayle feels these are likely sonsofRalph Balnkenship) 1. Richard c 1691 See later chapter 2. William c 1693 3. John c 1695 4. James c 1698 5. Ralph c1700
