Obituary of Elizabeth (Brandon) Burgin (1781-1862)*

    IN MEMORY

Died, in McDowell County, N. C. , January 29th, 1862, in the eighty-first year of her age, Elizabeth Burgin, consort of Maj. Benj. Burgin. Sister Burgin was born in Burke County, now McDowell. he was the daughter of Josiah Brandon, who was a Methodist preacher in the local ranks, who removed to Lincoln County, Middle Tennessee, in the fall of 1805. She gave her heart to God in the days of her youth, joined the M. E. Church and lived an acceptable life member for sixty-four years. None knew her but to love her. I visited her during her illness, and conversed freely with her, and on asking her with regard to her hopes beyond the grave, her reply was, "I have been preparing to die for upwards of sixty years, and now I look upon death as a welcome messenger." Her house was home for the wayworn itenerant. I knew something of her hospitality. Often has my heart been lightened in conversing with this eminent saint. I never visited her without feeling bettered by her pious counsel. But Grandmother (as she was familiarly called) is no more. I could but weep when on my round, I stepped into the Church and found Sister Burgin's seat vacant. But she is gone to swell the ranks of the redeemed in glory; and, thank God, we shall meet Grandmother Burgin again, where parting is no more. May this be our happy lot, is the prayer of

    J. R. BELLEW
